Persephone, the beautiful daughter of Demeter, the creator mother goddess, caught the eye of the god of the underworld, Hades.
The story of Persephone is a story of abduction and rape. Persephone was gathering flowers, when Hades kidnapped her, in
order to force her to be his wife.
When Hades stole Peresphone away, her mother, Demeter, was heartbroken. In
her grief, Demeter caused winter to descend upon the earth, killing the crops and threatened to destroy life on Earth. Zeus,
the brother of Hades and the king of the gods, forced Hades to let Persephone go. Unfortunately, because during her captivity,
she had eaten six seeds of pomegranite, she was not able to be completely free. Because of the six seeds she had consumed, Persephone was doomed to return to
Hades for six months out of every year. Thiscauses her mother, Demeter, to grieve for her daughter while she is
gone, causing winter to descend upon the earth, every year for that
time when Persephone is in the underworld, away from her mother.
